Hands-on — Connect Google Drive and Gmail

Practical step-by-step with screenshots. In 8 minutes, Claude reads your files and emails without you copying anything.

TL;DR

Connecting Google Drive + Gmail in Claude takes 3 minutes. From then on, in any conversation, it reads your files and emails by name.

Prerequisites

  1. Claude Pro, Team, or Enterprise (Free doesn’t have connectors)
  2. Google account (personal or Workspace)
  3. Admin permission if it’s a corporate account with restrictions

Step-by-step (8 min)

1 · Open Settings → Connectors

Click your avatar (top right corner) → Settings → Connectors in the sidebar.

2 · Connect Google Drive

  1. Find Google Drive in the list
  2. Click Connect
  3. You’re redirected to Google → log in
  4. Choose:
    • Entire My Drive (recommended for personal account)
    • Specific folders (recommended for corporate account)
  5. Authorize → you return to Claude
  6. Status turns green — Connected

Time: 60-90 seconds.

3 · Connect Gmail

Same flow. Important difference:

  • “Read only” scope if you just want it to summarize
  • “Read + send” scope if you want it to reply to emails on your behalf (be careful — always confirm before sending)

4 · Test in practice

Open a new conversation (not the current one). Paste this prompt:

List the 5 files modified in the last 7 days in my Drive.
For each: name + 1 sentence describing the content.

In 10-20 seconds: a real list, with real names. Claude read the files.

5 · Combine with Gmail

Pull the unread emails from the last week.
Classify them as: ACTION / INFORMATIONAL / IGNORE.
For the ACTION ones, suggest a reply in 3 lines in my tone (formal-direct, English).

In 30-60 seconds: full inbox triage.

What changes in your week

Before:

  1. Open Drive → search file → copy content → paste in chat
  2. Open Gmail → read email by email → decide manually
  3. Do this every day

After:

  1. Ask Claude directly. It accesses, reads, replies.
  2. Your week gains 3-5 hours.
Pegadinhas
  • Corporate accounts can block OAuth. If 'admin restrictions' appears, ask IT to allow Claude.ai as a third-party app in Workspace Admin Console.
  • Minimum scope. Don't authorize 'send email' if you won't use it. Reduces the risk surface.
  • Automatic refresh. Drive may take 1-2 minutes to reflect a recent change in a new file. Not a bug.
  • Sensitive data. If Drive contains confidential info (payroll, contracts), consider connecting via Claude Enterprise with ZDR.
  • Leaving the connector ≠ revoking. Disconnecting in Claude doesn't revoke the OAuth in Google. To fully revoke, go to myaccount.google.com/permissions.
